So the fifth edition of the Powell’s Books/The Morning News Tournament of Books just released the brackets for the competition.

The Contenders:
The White Tiger -Aravind Adiga
2666 - Roberto Bolano
A Partisan’s Daughter - Louis de Bernieres
The Northern Clemency - Philip Hensher
The Lazarus Project - Aleksandar Hemon
My Revolutions - Hari Kunzru
Unaccustomed Earth - Jhumpa Lahiri
The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks - E. Lockhart
Shadow Country - Peter Matthiessen
The Dart League King - Keith Lee Morris
A Mercy - Toni Morrison
Steer Towards Rock - Fae Myenne Ng
Netherland - Joseph O’Neill
City of Refuge - Tom Piazza
Home - Marilynne Robinson
Harry - Revised, Mark Sarvas

The only one I have read is Netherland, which I liked and it has been really praised by the critics. I started White Tiger but have drifted away.

Here is the bracket and the judging starts next Monday.

My pick is White Tiger over Netherland in the finals.

The Next Big Indie Band (possibly)

The Soft Pack is playing at The Black Cat on Mar 24th. Their song Parasites is one of my faves over the past couple of months.

The Soft Pack
Parasites

They are part of the NME Tour that looks to be kicking off at the Cat that night.

Also playing are White Lies, and Friendly Fires. Heard them but have no real opinion of either band. I believe they’re both UK bands.

Check this show out, should be a good time to catch a band that will probably be headlining The Black Cat soon.

If you know me(or if you tuned in to the ABCs of Music), then you know that Throwing Muses is my favorite band ever. If you didn’t you now do!

They are back together for The Breeders curated All Tomorrow’s Parties in May and just returned from Australia.

A great video of the show was posted on Moshcam.com.

Here is Pearl (Red Heaven, 1992) from that show:

They also have some dates in the US for March.

March 10, Philadelphia, PA - World Cafe Live
March 11, New York, NY - Carnegie Hall
March 12, Brooklyn, NY - Music Hall of Williamsburg
March 14, Cambridge, MA - The Middle East

No DC dates. But I am holding out hope for some ATP tune up shows in April or May.

And here is one of my favorites songs ever:

Clips from the upcoming Bad Brains documentary. The filmmakers are currently seeking submissions of any and all Bad Brains related material (film/video, photo, audio, flyers, etc.), so contact them if you have anything: badbrainsmovie@gmail.com.

And if you are interested in punk history in any way, shape or form then you must read Dance of Days.
